Chishikiyoku

So, I'm really serious this time.....really! I've picked out what I want, or rather, it found me, and it fits, perfectly. I couldn't have created anything better myself. It's not particularly artistic, or impressive...but I like it. So here's the tattoo:

知識欲

Chishikiyoku, which roughly translates into an insatiable thirst for knowledge. Quel perfection!
Think they can print kanji in the states?

Personally, I don't think I could print that. So that eliminates me. I once considered tattooing a picture of my headboard on my ankle, but my ankle was too small. I think I told you about that.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I accept your choice of symbols. I don't know anything about the kanji, nor do I think anybody else in the Midwest does. Are those symbols strictly horizontal, or can they be read vertically as well?

Kanji tattoos are commonly done most places, although I have heard some horror stories about tattoo artists getting the characters wrong and writing something completely unintended. You can start by looking at the kanji examples on BME. Some of the photos list the studio where the tattoo was done. And you, of all people, might actually find this site interesting: Vanishing Tattoo follows a tattoo artist and a travel writer as they travel together about the planet in search of traditional tattoo artists and methods.

Scott - They can be read vertically as well, though I'm not sure I'd opt for that strategy, at least not for a tattoo. Still looking for ideas...and where's my trivia?

Brian - That is my fear, not so much that they can't do it in the states, but that they'll fuck it up and brand me with some terrible Japanese phrase, of which there are plenty. I would just get it done here, though tattoo parlors are few and far between and usually reserved for the...don't laugh...mafia. Yeah, there's a Japanese mafia - who knew?

The truth - Sorry, I don't know your name, though your comment was just as equally well received. I'm glad you enjoyed my photography. I admit, it's not much, but it passes the time. I try to update fairly regularly, so you should stop by again...Flickr, that is. This site is just crap, I'm the first to admit that.

Take care tomadachi. Ciao.

I was aware actually of the association between tattoos and the Yakuza. I've watched a few too many samurai films, I think. Perhaps you can at least get someone there with decent calligraphic skills to write it out for you so you can show the tattoo artist an example less prosaic than Times New Roman ...

I like the idea of you getting a tatoo
I like the idea of your concept behind the tatoo
However
I disagree with the form of your tatoo

Americans who permanently imprint Eastern characters on their body usually bring to mind words like "cliche." You're a very creative individual, don't scare yourself with a momentary impression.

In your case, Lauren, this word comes to my mind (from The Devil's Dictionary)

PLATITUDE, n. The fundamental element and special glory of popular literature. A thought that snores in words that smoke. The wisdom of a million fools in the diction of a dullard. A fossil sentiment in artificial rock. A moral without the fable. All that is mortal of a departed truth. A demi-tasse of milk-and-mortality. The Pope's-nose of a featherless peacock. A jelly-fish withering on the shore of the sea of thought. The cackle surviving the egg. A desiccated epigram.

I think it's a great idea, and I can't think of a better word (phrase?) to describe you. Go for it!

It doesn't seem as though it would be all that cliche getting it. I think you might have more reason to get it than many of the other people that get them. Regardless of meaning, if it makes you happy and you can see having it long term, I'd say go for it.

Here you go, Lauren. A little something I photoshopped together from a couple of my sketches and some stolen internet porn. Not that I imagine you would even consider something like this ...

Holy hell Brian! Where did you find that? And how? But more importantly, where??

I've been thinking about getting a tattoo myself for ages, and figured out a while ago how to photoshop tattoo ideas onto photos in order to see what they would look like. For the picture above, I just used a couple of my own sketches and did a bit of googling around the unseemlier corners of the Internet to find a young lady with a naked back. The design was an idea I had a while ago to make a tribal from the traditional Japanese koi-pond motif. And the lotus was originally from something I've been considering for my own arm.
